Types and the Default Type

Every item has a Type: Logins, Finance, Notes and so on. The types are the pills along the top of the lists, after All, in the order of the alphabet. Choose a pill and you see only the items of that type.

An item takes its Type from the template it is made from, and every template is listed under one type. You can rename the types, give them other icons, hide the ones you don't use, and add your own.

Opening the Types page

Open the Info tab and, under Metadata Configuration, tap Types.

Open the Info page and, under Metadata Configuration, click Types. The menu lists Types under the same heading.

Each row shows the type's icon and name, how many items carry it and how many templates are listed under it. The count at the top, such as 8 of 30, is how many types there are of the thirty there can be.

The eight built-in types

Type The built-in templates listed under it
Codes One-Time Code, Private Key
Finance Card, Bank Account
Identity Personal Identity, Work Identity, License, Warranty
Infrastructure Wifi, Wifi Router Admin, Database, Server
Logins Login Credentials
Notes Secure Note
Other Membership, _Create your own
Software Software License

A built-in type can be renamed and given another icon, and it can be hidden, but it can't be deleted. Its colour is the theme's.

Renaming a type and changing its icon

  • Rename: tap the type's name, type the new one and tap the tick.
  • Icon: tap the type's icon, choose another and tap Save, or Cancel to keep it as it is.
  • Rename: click Rename or the type's name, type the new one and click Save.
  • Icon: click the type's icon, choose another and click Save, or Cancel to keep it as it is.

Every item and template of the type follows it straight away: nothing else needs changing.

A built-in type you have changed is marked Changed, and a renamed one's row says what it was built in as. Give it that name again and its name is as it came. To undo every change at once, open its icons and choose Restore Original: its name, its icon and its Password Age go back to how the app has them.

The rules for names

The same rules hold for a type of your own and for a built-in type you rename:

  • Letters, digits and dashes only, such as Home-Network.
  • It begins with a letter or a digit.
  • 15 characters at most.
  • Its first letter is made a capital for you, and the rest stay as you typed them: nas becomes Nas, and NAS stays NAS.
  • Two types can't have the same name, even with different capital letters.

The line under the name field tells you if a name isn't allowed.

Hiding a built-in type

Turn off the switch beside a built-in type to hide it. A hidden type leaves the pills, and its templates are offered nowhere until you show it again; they are kept, and nothing is lost. Turn the switch on to bring it back.

A type can be hidden only while no item carries it, archived items and the Bin counted. If items carry it, the app says how many, for example 3 items carry “Finance”: a type with items cannot be hidden. The Default Type can't be hidden either.

Adding your own types

There can be thirty types in all, the eight built-in ones among them, so you can add up to twenty-two of your own.

  1. Type its name in the field for a new type.
  2. Choose its icon and colour with the icon beside the field. There are twelve colours, and the next one no type has yet is chosen for you.
  3. Choose Add.

A type of your own starts with no templates. To list a template under it, open the template and choose the type there: see Item Templates. You can rename it, and change its icon and its colour, whenever you like.

On the iPhone, the pills and the items' icons take the theme's colours; a type's own colour shows on the Types page and on your Mac.

The type's pill and its icon are drawn in its colour.

Deleting your own types

A type of your own can be deleted only while no item carries it (archived items and the Bin counted), no template is listed under it, and it isn't the Default Type. Move its templates to another type first, if it has any.

Swipe the type to the left, tap Delete, then Delete Type. The Default Type has no swipe.

Click Delete… on the type's row, then Delete Type. The Default Type's Delete… is greyed out.

The Default Type

The Default Type is the type a new login starts on. There is always one, and to start with it is Logins.

New logins start on it from New Login, when you save a new login as you sign up on a site, and from New Login on the Share Sheet.

New logins start on it from New Login in the menu, and when you drop a page on the key to make a login for it.

To choose another, turn on the Default Type switch under that type. The switch moves from the old one, which can't simply be switched off: there is always a Default Type. The Default Type can't be hidden or deleted.

A new login opens on the Default Type, and you can change its Type there before you save. The types offered are the Default Type and every shown type that has a template a login can start on.

Each type also has a Default Template, the template its new logins start on. Item Templates and Default Templates explains it.

Not the same as Opens On

The Default Type decides where new logins go. Opens On, in Settings, decides which pill the lists open on.

Password Age

Each type also has a Password Age: how many days a password of that type may stand before it is shown as aged, from 0 (off) to 999, and 250 to start with. See Password Age and Rotation.
